An engaging story of Merckx’s life. Essentially the man was just better at cycling than everyone else in the world for a 5 year stretch. There wasn’t really any special skills that he had he was just stronger and competed harder than everyone else. He absolutely destroyed his body in the process. Racing with a broken jaw. Attacking at crazy times and then just holding his lead the whole race. He broke vertabre in his back at one point and was back racing within weeks. Part of what was missing from this book was the spark or relatability. Merckx was just on another level so there isn’t a lot of relatability to his story. He was the tadej pogachar of his generation. There will never be anyone truly like him.
